Medicinal preparations in Prague pharmacies at the end of the 16th century

Summary

The paper compares the contents of a rates list of drugs of 1592 with two drug inventories of 1585, focusing on medicinal and galenical preparations. The list was made by the physician Professor Adam Zalužanský of Zalužany, and the two inventories record the estates of deceased Prague pharmacists. The comparisons reveal that at least 350 sorts of medicinal preparations were available in the two pharmacies (without distilled liquids). It is surprising that only one third of them was kept in both pharmacies. The rates list, which includes only selected items, contains 85 sorts of medicinal preparations. The paper takes also account of two period pharmacopoeias, Dispensatorium Valerii Cordi of Nürnberg and Pharmacopoea Augustana of Augsburg, which were the most commonly used ones.
