Summary

Introduction: Parenthood of a child with a chronic illness, developmental disability, or the risk of developmental delay due to premature birth can be very stressful. Families which encounter the presence of stressors become a risk group in terms of coping with stress. One of the stress factors that can negatively affect the quality of life of parents and caregivers is an illness or disability of a family member. Objective: To determine the level of burden and stress in parents of children with a disability and in parents of children without a disability with regard to the quality of life of parents in both selected groups.

Methodology: The sample of respondents consisted of 80 parents. 40 persons were parents of children with mental, physical or combined disability and 40 were parents of children without disabilities.  In order to determine the level of stress, the tool Parenting Stress Index 4 Short Form (PSI 4 SF) has been used. In order to describe the quality of life of parents, the Pediatrics Quality of Live Inventory

(PedsQL) as well as descriptive statistics has been used.

Results: Parents of children with disabilities showed a lower quality of life in comparison with parents of children without disabilities in all domains, i.e. physical functioning, emotional functioning, social and cognitive functioning, communication, worries, daily activities and family relationships. By comparing the level of stress and quality of life, it was identified that the higher the stress score of the parents, the lower the quality of life, in all areas of Parenting Stress Index 4 Short Form.

Conclusion: Stress is perceived as a phenomenon that has negative effect on personality. Parents taking care of disabled children can also be endangered by burden and stress. The effect of stress factors is then reflected in the quality of life of the family. Therefore, early identification of parental stress is very important in order to maintain the quality of life of the whole family
