Overview

Psychodermatological Approach in the Management of Atopic Dermatitis

The relationship between the psyche and the skin is a complex but at the same time fascinating process, just like the relationship with other organs of the human body. Psychodermatology deals with the interaction between mind and skin. It involves a complex interaction between the brain and the skin, including its nervous system and immune system. The most frequently used system divides psychodermatological disorders into five main groups according to the category of skin disorder. They are classified as psychophysiological disorders, primary psychiatric disorders, secondary psychiatric disorders, skin sensory syndromes, and the use of psychotropic drugs in dermatology. In this review, we will focus on the interaction between the skin and the human psyche and the psychosomatic aspect of atopic dermatitis, with the aim of drawing attention to the need for a comprehensive approach to the patient in both health and illness, with regard to his physical and mental health.
