Summary
Global epidemic of obesity has concerned recently the Czech Republic as well. European Charter on Obesity accepted by Ministers of Health during WHO ministerial conference in Istanbul in November 2006 pointed out the growing prevalence of childhood obesity and need of action. Body composition measurements of Czech children showed the increasing prevalence of more serious obesity and the earlier onset of adiposity rebound. The well known consequences of obesity include metabolic changes (dyslipidemia, insulin resistance), hypertension, orthopedic and psychological problems. Very important is prevention and follow-up of overweight and obesity by three degrees of pediatricians’ care including care by pediatricians, specialists – obesity specialists and centres at faculty hospitals.
