Summary
Vitamin D is an essential hormone with a substantial antirachitic effect. In addition to its important role in the homeostasis of calcium and phosphorus, over the last years many physicians have also been focusing on the noncalcemic actions of vitamin D (immunomodulatory, antiproliferative, effect on the blood pressure regulation, etc.). In a review article, the authors summarise the latest information on the physiological effect of vitamin D and its relation to autoimmune and civilization diseases.
The authors point out the significance of 25-hydroxyvitamin D determination in a serum which serves as a “barometer” of vitamin D reserves in the body in order to achieve the optimal supplementation. They re-evaluate the current recommendation in the prevention of vitamin D deficiency and present practical instructions to be used in serving cholecalciferol in 600-800 IU/day dosage from the second week to the third year of a child. An adequate intake of calcium is a part of the hypovitaminosis D prevention.
