Summary
From 2007 to 2011 total of 103 pediatric patients have been treated with hyperbaric oxygen therapy at our workplace. The patients were treated for the following indications: sensorineural hearing loss or tinnitus, central nervous system impairment mostly due to traumatic brain injury or hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy after cardiopulmonary resuscitation, acute carbon monoxide poisoning, complications of oncological treatment, acute traumatic peripheral ischemia, necrotizing soft tissue infections, nonhealing wound and chronic refractory osteomyelitis. 96% of the children were treated in hospital, of which 48% in the intensive care unit or department of pediatric resuscitation and intensive care.
The favorable outcome of the treatment was observed in 82% of cases. In 18% of cases, treatment was not successful, or it was not possible to assess the outcome. In 54 patients a total of 178 episodes of unexpected incidents were recorded during treatment. In relation to the total number of treatment sessions incident rate of 17.5% was detected. Serious health and life-threatening complications or side effects of treatment were not observed in any case.
Key words:
