Summary

Aim:
Retroperitoneal sarcoma (RPS) represents a rare malignant tumor with high risk of recurrences and lethal course of disease. The aim of the study is an evaluation of the results of the retroperitoneal soft tissue sarcomas treatment.

Material and methods:
A cohort of 43 patients treated for RPS was retrospectively analyzed. The adjuvant irradiation and chemotherapy was given all patients with positive surgical margin (PSM) and high-grade lesion. We assessed an influence of positive surgical margin and presence of highgrade RPS to risk of recurrence and survival. Median follow-up was 60 (26–128) months. The median age was 61 (35 015075) years. Twelve out of 14 patients with high-grade RPS had the recurrence. All patients with PSM experienced of a recurrence. One patient with the low-grade RPS had metastases as a primary recurrence. The overall survival was 84% and disease-free survival was 69%.

Results:
The overall survival of high-grade and lowgrade RPS was 57% respective 96%. The aggressive complete resection is only effective method for prevention local recurrence. PSM had negative impact to local recurrence and high-grade RPS had negative impact to survival.

Conclusion:
Current adjuvant chemo and radiotherapy has very limited efficacy.

Key words:
retroperitoneal sarcoma, surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, high-grade lesions, low- -grade lesions.
