Summary
Type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM2T) is a disease that is increasing in incidence and prevalence in all countries (with a large percentage of undiagnosed diabetes in the population to be reckoned with) and has a serious socioeconomic impact. The disease is accompanied by both acute and chronic complications, which translate not only into a poorer quality of life but also significantly increased morbidity and mortality, especially if it is not adequately treated (life expectancy of patients is reduced by more than 25–30 %). However, DM2T as a cause of patient death is very rarely reported by the examining physician. Also, patient mortality data is not part of the reporting to the National Center for Health Information. Thus, the data reported on the health care provided is the most accurate data available on the diagnosis, treatment of DM and its complications. No study on the prevalence and mortality of patients treated for DM2T has been carried out in Slovakia so far. Therefore, this retrospective epidemiological analysis was designed in collaboration between clinical and outpatient clinics and the health insurance company Dôvera, using data from insured patients with DM2T during period 2010–2015 and during the COVID-19 pandemic in April/2020–March/2021, to evaluate the level of mortality from DM2T in these insured patients.
