Summary

Pregnant women with diabetes mellitus are at increased risk of serious complications during pregnancy, in regard to the fetus, newborn and mother, which are mainly associated with insufficient diabetes control. The reaching of intensive metabolic control is often limited by occurrence of hypoglycemia. Furthermore, pregnancy entails specific physiologically and quickly changing requirements regarding insulin need. In recent years, significant progress has been achieved regarding the methods and effectiveness of monitoring glycemia, introduction of new insulin analogues and development of modern practices of insulin use, in particular the insulin pump. The paper brings an overview of insulin preparations currently used in clinical practice and possibilities of their utilization in pregnancy.
