Summary

Health literacy includes people’s knowledge, their motivation and competence to acquire, understand, evaluate, and apply adequate health information to people in everyday life to judge and decide in the area of health care, disease prevention, and health promotion to preserve or improve the quality of life. Citizens’ health literacy is influenced by factors such as education, age, gender, place of residence and last but not least economic conditions too. People’s attitudes towards a healthy lifestyle correspond to their level of health literacy.

Goal:
The main goal of this study was to determine the health literacy of people at risk of poverty living in the South Bohemia and to assess these aspects of lifestyle aspects such as alcohol consumption, smoking and physical activity.

Methods:
The study was performed by a quantitative method using a short form of a standardized questionnaire containing 16 items (one-dimensional Rasch scale) to identify the health literacy.

Results:
Based on the statistic data, insufficient health literacy was identified in 31.9%, problematic health literacy in 34.3% and sufficient health literacy in 33.8% of the respondents at risk of poverty. Statistically significant correlations were identified between: education and health literacy; education and smoking, alcohol consumption and exercise; net income per household and smoking, consumption of alcohol and exercise.

Conclusions:
The results of the research show a lack of health literacy in people at risk of poverty. For this reason, it would be advisable to focus more attention on the subject under this target group.
