The parent-child physical activity of Czech families with normal weight children and overweight or obese children

Summary
Objective:
The main objective of the study was to reveal which lifestyle-related indicators of families (step count (SC), screen time (ST), weight status and active participation in organized leisure-time physical activity (OPA)) help normal weight children and overweight/obese children achieve the daily SC recommendations.
Methods:
A nationally representative sample comprised 834 families including 1,564 parent-child dyads. The participants wore the Yamax pedometer for at least eight hours a day on at least four weekdays and both weekend days, and completed a family log book (anthropometric parameters, SC, and ST). Logistic regression analyses (OR) were used to investigate whether parents’ meeting the daily SC recommendation (10,000 SC/day), non-excessive ST (< 2 h/day), weight status, and participation in OPA were associated with children’s achievement of their daily SC (11,500 SC/day for pre-schoolers and 11,000/13,000 SC/day for school-aged girl/boys), separately for weekdays and weekends.
Results:
In families with normal weight children, parents’ SC was significantly associated with their offsprings’ odds to achieve the daily SC recommendation (mothers in the model: ORweekdays/weekends = 3.02/6.03, fathers in the model: ORweekends = 3.91, p < 0.001) regardless of their age category, or gender. In families with overweight/obese children, only the mother’s achievement of the SC recommendations (ORweekdays/weekends = 3.58/12.48) and non-excessive ST significantly (p < 0.001) increased the odds of their children for reaching the daily SC recommendation. Children’s participation in OPA increased the odds of all children achieving the daily SC recommendations on weekdays (OR = 2.02–3.16), however, for overweight/obese children this remained non-significant.
Conclusions:
The mother’s physical activity (achievement of at least 10,000 SC/day) is significantly associated with the achievement of recommended daily SC in overweight/obese preschool and school-aged children. Physical activity enhancement programmes for overweight/obese children cannot rely solely on the active participation of children in OPA, they also need to take other family-based physical activity, especially at weekends, into account..
