Results of a parental questionnaire examining speech and language development in Czech-speaking children aged 5.5–6.5 years – study project

Summary
Questionnaires are commonly used to determine the degree of developmental delay in speech or language. Two basic types can be distinguished. The first uses item ratings for each category, is usually standardised and contains norms. In our pilot study, we used the second type of questionnaire, in which parents of children answered questions related to environmental factors, family and personal history, and speech and language development.
The aim of the research investigation was to design a parental questionnaire and to determine whether it had sufficiently good psychometric properties (sensitivity, specificity, ROC curve) to distinguish children with significant difficulties in language development, and whether it could be used for broad data collection in the Czech Republic.
Methodology: All children were subjected to a comprehensive speech therapy diagnosis and, based on the results of the speech therapy diagnosis, were divided into four groups.
Results: According to ROC analysis, a cut-off score of 2 points was determined with a sensitivity of 96.1% and specificity of 91.4%, and a high AUC value of 0.985 to distinguish children without deficits in language development from children with developmental language disorders. The discriminatory ability of the questionnaire is very good.
Conclusion: The parental questionnaire showed sufficiently good psychometric properties in the pilot study. Therefore, the Association of Clinical Speech and Language Therapists (AKL CR) approved and financially supported the subsequent nationwide questionnaire collection.
