Summary

Pulmonary hypertension is defined as an abnormal increase of blood pressure in pulmonary artery. It may occur in a specific damage of pulmonary vessels (pulmonary arterial hypertension) or within the framework of a secondary cause (chronic heart failure, respiratory disease, etc.)

Pulmonary arterial hypertension is caused by increased lung vascular resistance (pre-capillary form of pulmonary hypertension) with increased pressure if lung artery, increased pulmonary vascular resistance and normal blood pressure in the left atrium or in wedge (pulmonary artery wedge pressure). The mean age of the patients at the time of diagnosis is around 50 years with more frequent incidence in females. The uncured pulmonary arterial hypertension is a fatal disease.
