Summary

The study assesses the level of exposure to rubber fumes and dust, nitrosamines, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons during the production of small rubber parts. The aim of this study is to contribute to the specification of health risk in the rubber industry.

The measurements were realized between 2004 and 2007 at the following workplaces:
material preparation, vulcanization and finalizing operations. The sampling and analyses of substances were realized by the following methodology – MDHS 47/2 for rubber dust and fumes, NIOSH 5506 for polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons and NIOSH 2522 for nitrosamines.

None of the 25 monitored workplaces showed increased acceptable exposure limits. Hazard was assessed by the comparison of the workplace air contamination levels to the hygienic limits. The concentration in the workplace air reached the following levels: polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (classified as carcinogens) 0.087–0.178 μg/m3 during material preparation and 0.052–0.633 mg/m3 during vulcanization; rubber fumes 0.17–0.47 mg/m3 during vulcanization and 0.11–0.58 μg/m3 during finalizing operations. Nitrosamine values weren’t found higher than the detection limit of the used method (0.01–0.06 μg/m3).

Key words:
rubber fumes, nitrosamines, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, health risk, monitoring, rubber industry
