Summary
Introduction: The problem of physical manipulation with patients in providing nursing care represents a long-term observation of phenomenon especially abroad. In our project we paid particular attention to less published factors, specifically the safe manipulation techniques and possible risks for the nursing personnel and persons taken care of.
Material and Methods: For the information about physical manipulation in the nursing care of patients related to the components of techniques in physical manipulation the nurses provide, a quantitative method was used characteri- zed by of structured disguised yet involved observation. The sheets of record followed 10 nursing activities, where the activities included lifting, moving and rotation. The activities were followed in connection with the condition and experiencing of the patient and experiencing of the pains by nurses in the course of implementation. In the south Bohemian hospitals, a total of 131 observations were performed. Analysis of the obtained data was performed in the Microsoft Excel program.
Results: Four categories were created form the observation: Physical manipulation and involvement of the patient; Physical manipulation – comfort, safety, risks; Principals of physical manipulation; Possibilities of decreasing the physical load for the nurses in physical manipulation. The authors believe that physical manipulation is mostly provided correctly. The highest risks are apparently in the lack of effective tools, and the lack of time, which makes effective manipulation impossible, insufficiently used kinesthetic for the body of the nursing persons and communication with the patient.
Conclusion: Physical manipulation with the patient in providing nursing care has not been executed according to most recent rule. Consequently, health damage to the general nurses and patients can develop. Physical manipulation is an everyday activity at risk and higher and consistent attention should paid not only to the education and availability of tool, but it is necessary to begin with legislation. Management of medical institutions and observation of consequences of non-effective physical manipulation for health and thereby for investing financial expenses of the equipment versus work incapacity.
