Summary
Abscesses of the neck are a relatively common condition in children. In the case of an abscess located below the skull base, traditional surgical techniques carry relatively significant operating risks. In this paper, we present cases of pediatric patients where we chose as an alternative method needle aspiration of the abscess with the assistance of an electro-optical MRI-Planning-Navigation System (StealthStation TREON, Medtronic Inc) which enables precise control of the aspiration needle during surgery. We believe that this method may prove an appropriate alternative to the traditional surgical approach.
Key words:
abscess, needle aspiration, navigation system.
