Choline significance in nutritional supplementation in pregnant women

Summary

Maternal diet during pregnancy and lactation is the simplest prevention for fetal development. Adequate intake of choline decreases the risk of birth defects, protects from undesirable exposure of the fetus to alcohol and has potential effects on hippocampal neurogenesis and memory function. Choline is one of the major source of methyl groups and very important component of epigenetic mechanism. Meat, milk and eggs contain enough choline. For women who do not eat vegetarian diet, a supplement should be considered.
