Summary
The aim of the study was to determine changes in assessment of health-related quality of life in patients with multiple sclerosis (MS). To assess the changes we used results of two studies, conducted in 2010 and 2013 at the Therapeutic Centre for Demyelinisation Diseases of the University Hospital in Ostrava. A total of 60 patients (average age 43.5 years, 46 women and 16 men) participated in our study. In co-operation with physicians the disability status of the patients was rated at the Kurtzke Expanded Disability Status Scale (EDSS) and the patients were assigned to three groups, based on the EDSS score: score 0–3.5, n = 24; score 4–5.5; n = 18; and score 6–9, n = 18. The quality of life was evaluated with the SF-36 survey; in 2013 assessments using the Zung Self-Rating Depression Scale (SDS) and the Pain Interference with Daily Activities Questionnaire (DIBDA) were added. In 2013 the EDSS score was significantly higher in patients with relapsing-remitting MS (p = 0.035) and secondary progressive MS (p = 0.001). The total score of quality of life in 2013 was lower in all components of SF-36; a statistically significant difference was found in the physical functioning (p = 0.001). The scores of quality of life were significantly higher (p < 0.009) for all components in the patients with lower disability levels. The effect of pain and depression on worsening quality of life in individual components was statistically significant (p < 0.05).
