Summary
The presented study deals with one of the approaches to the evaluation of the level of postural control. During its examination, one can choose between two options – clinical or instrumental evaluation (also posturography). The equilibrium capability can be measured either under static conditions (static posturography) or dynamic conditions (dynamic posturography). Static conditions, however, may not always be sufficiently informative, so it is preferable to increase their difficulty. One possibility is to use the so-called dual tasks. In the context of this work, dual tasks mean simultaneous cognitive tasks during posturally demanding situations (challenging situations with respect to the group). From the 1980s to the present time, a number of research papers have been investigating postural control during dual-task situations. This work summarizes information regarding the evaluation of postural control with the emphasis on the use of the cognitive dual tasks, including the presentation of several realized researches. The main focus of those studies is to compare the effects of different types of cognitive tasks and different posturally demanding conditions on the interaction of factors involved in maintaining balance and cognitive processes. The influence of age and health on the quality of postural control during dual tasks is also examined. Research results are not unanimous. Part of the studies presents “performance degradation” during dual tasks, other studies, on the other hand, point to the positive impact of dual tasks on the level of postural control.
