Summary
The significance of incontinence post radical prostatectomy has risen with the increased use of the procedure. While rates are high in the initial postoperative period, in the majority of patients symptoms become manageable with time. In those with persistent impairment careful clinical assessment is required and both conservative and surgical management options exist. While the artificial urinary sphincter has been the gold standard in surgical management many alternatives exist and are still being developed. The timing, choice and patient selection for surgical management remains a challenge.
