Attempt to Treat Magnesium Deficiency

Attempt to Treat Magnesium Deficiency

Magnesium deficiency is at present one of he most frequently, however rarely diagnoseddisorders of the electrolyte metabolism. It is due to the general diminution of Mg in naturalresources and changes in dietary and living habits of the population in industrialised countries. This deficiency is manifested by polymorphous complaints. Decisive for starting treatment isaccording to the authors a drop of Mg in red blood cells and the presence of subjective complaints. In 20 patients meeting these criteria the authors started treatment with the dietetic supple-ment. The effect of treatment was checked after 30 days. Subjective improvement was recordedin 75 % of the patients. Laboratory values improved after one-month treatment in 45 % of thepatients, in 20 % a tendency towards improvement was recorded but the values did not yetreach normal levels. In the remaining 30 % there was rather a decline of Mg in red blood cells.Treatment of Mg deficiency is a long-term problem, after 30 days only partial results can beevaluated. It is important to proceed with treatment and follow up the patients by clinical andlaboratory methods and adjust the dosage individually.
