Summary

The capacity of short-term verbal memory and other memory parameters were measured following the therapy for an intracranial aneurysm (AN) after 1 month and 1 year. Patients (N = 117) were examined using Auditory Verbal Learning Test (AVLT) which repeatedly measured the capacity of short-term verbal memory. Two measurements carried out after subarachnoidal hemorrhage (SAH) have shown significantly increased capacity of short-term verbal memory. The average performance of the set was improved from the zone of –l,2 standard deviation (SD) below the mean norm to –0,5 SD below the mean norm, i.e. the subnormal values were shifted to the zone of normal ones. The extent of qualitative errors – confabulations - decreased together with the quantitative increase of the verbal memory capacity. No differences were found between groups of patients according to the type of therapy (patients with subarachnoidal hemorrhage (SAH), aneurysm (AN) treated by surgery /N = 35/, patients with SAH, endovascular therapy /N = 39/, patients without SAH, AN treated by surgery /N = 24/, patients without SAH, endovascular treatment /N = 16/). The trial has shown the effects of recovery after SAH in the sphere of the short-term verbal memory capacity and the absence of differences between the groups studied.
