Static Computed Posturography (SCPG) and its Contribution to Quantification of Postural Equilibrium

Summary
The article deals with static computed posturography (SCPG) and its contribution to quantification of postural equilibrium.
Method and material:
1,398 posturographic investigations were performed in the years 2000–2005 in the ENT (Ear, Nose and Throat) Department of the University Hospital in Hradec Králové. From the data measured, an eight-degree scale was created for quantification of postural equilibrium. Further subsets of patients without clinically apparent disequilibrium and those with apparent postural lesions were then detached and subsequently compared mutually and with a control file of healthy people.
Results:
Distributions of some values (namely the area circumscribed by the sway of the centre of foot pressure; the Romberg quotients) resemble a histographic curve, and most results were within the “lower norm” or the “upper norm” scale range or “over the norm”. Patients with disorders of postural equilibrium exceeded normal values in multiple parameters, namely in the centre of foot pressure. A difference in results in the files of patients with compensated and decompensated postural disturbance was also observed, suggesting possible truth in the claim that SCPG may be used for detection of latent postural equilibrium failure.
Discussion:
SCPG is limited by the high scatter of results obtained, which argue against the potency of the method to quantify postural disequilibrium. Another argument against posturography is the risk of measurement disturbance.
Conclusion:
SCPG is a fast, objective method of postural equilibrium investigation, sensitive to latent postural disorders, whose limitations however make the interpretation of results troublesome. The method appears to be useful for screening based quantitative evaluation of postural equilibrium.
