The Study of Salivary Proteins Using Proteomic Methods in Periodontal Diseases

Summary

Background:
The aim of the present work is to give a brief overview of the latest achievements in the study of salivary proteins by proteomic methods in periodontal diseases.

Traditional diagnostic methods based on visual assessment and radiographic infomations about periodontal status fail to identify people at risk of developing the disease and in determining the degree of susceptibility to disease progression.

Recently, there was when examining body fluids, including saliva analysis, a significant growth in the use of proteomic methods to become an additional tool in the diagnosis of periodontal disease. In the search for potential biomarkers saliva provides a number of advantages including the availability of samples, the possibility of non-invasive sampling and complexity of protein content.

It is therefore a challenge to establish criteria for the diagnosis of periodontal diseases, which are based on evidence (evidence-based criteria). This approach, which uses technology based on mass spectrometry is able to identify and quantify large numbers of proteins and their isoforms in one comprehensive oral fluid samples and extract detailed information on the regulatory mechanisms of the host at the protein level.

Conclusion:
The clinical diagnosis based on the analysis of oral fluids, especially one that uses proteomic method allows to determine the relationship between salivary proteins and the condition. Therefore, the purpose of this article attempt to provide an update on the study of salivary proteins proteomic methods and their suitability for use as biomarkers for diagnosing periodontal diseases.
