Contact Sensitivity to European Standard Series of Allergens

Summary
We evaluated frequency of sensitization to allergens of European Standard Series (ESS) in 2218 patients with eczema during years 2001–2008 (mean age 44,4 years, 1531 females, 687 males). In 871 patients atopic eczema was the main diagnosis. 813 patients (36,7%) were sensitized to one allergen at least. The most important allergen was nickel sulphate in 12,7% of patients (females 16,8 and males 3,6%, respectively). The next important sensitizer were balsam of Peru in 6,8%, frangrance mix in 5,4%, cobalt chloride in 4,6%, colophony in 4%, lanolin alcohol in 3,6%, potassium dichromate in 2,7%, formaldehyde in 2,3%, neomycin sulphate in 2,1%, epoxy resin in 1,9%, thiuram-mix in 1,9%, paraphenylenediamin in 1,7%, kathon CG in 1,5%, N-phenyl-isopropyl-para-phenylenediamin in 1,4% and paraben mix in 1,1% of patients, respectively. Frequency of sensitization to other allergens was lower than 1%. In female group the sensitization was statistically significantly more frequent than in male group (p<0,001 – binomial test). In the group of patients with atopic eczema the sensitization was statistically significantly lower than in the group of non-atopic patients.
