Summary
Care for patients with congenital heart defects should be comprehensive and targeted not only to the defect itself but also to the diverse range of associated diagnoses that can fundamentally affect morbidity and mortality. Iron deficiency anaemia is an affiliated serious diagnosis that exacerbates tissue hypoxia in patients with cyanotic heart defects and contributes to the development of heart failure in defects with significant left-to-right shunt.
The authors present a brief overview article on this issue.
