From the adult type through NIDDM and second type of diabetes – what is coming thereafter?

Summary

Critical analysis of the proposal of new diabetes mellitus subtypes. In the proposal the current type 1 diabetes (together with the late autoimmune diabetes) is renamed to Severe AutoImmune Diabetes (SAID) and the current type 2 is divided into four subtypes: Severe Insulin Deficient Diabetes, Severe Insulin Resistant Diabetes, Mild Obesity- related Diabetes and Mild Age-Related Diabetes (SIDD, SIRD, MOD, MARD). From point of view of pathological physiology the new proposal is a significant step towards the classification of different forms of the disease taking into account the complex and heterogenous pathogenesis of diabetes mellitus. Application of new subtypes in everyday diabetology practice should be an important contribution to precision and personalized medicine.
