Overview

Over the past two decades, the cost of treating type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) has increased dramatically, and a greater financial burden is being passed on to T2DM patients and their families [1]. Medication co-payments can be a major source of stress for people with T2DM and contribute to poorer medication use [2]; in many cases, cost reduction strategies can improve treatment as well as patient behavior [3]. Metformin is still recommended as a first-line antidiabetic treatment for patients with T2DM because of its relatively high efficacy to modify glycaemia and HbA_1c and other benefits.
