Summary
The purpose of the study:
Short-term follow-up of patients aged over 75 years after open-heart surgery.
Patients:
A group of 504 patients at least four years after surgery at the Department of Cardiac Surgery, České Budějovice General Hospital, was analyzed.
Results:
73 % of patients in the age group 75–79 years and 60 % in the age group over 80 years were alive. 47 % patients are without symptoms; 94 % of patients believed their health had improved and 97 % of patients stated that the decision to undergo surgery was the correct one.
Conclusion:
Despite the higher operating risk, open-heart surgery in elderly people is the method of choice that leads to a better quality of life.
