Summary

With regard to the increasing prevalence of obesity already during growth, special attention has been focused on all the possible factors, which can cause and/or contribute to its development. In addition to genetic and environmental influences over the course of the whole life, information was found on the early factors, which influence the organism from the very beginning of life, including the foetal period. Long-term studies have shown e.g. the effect of mother’s BMI before pregnancy, magnitude of weight gains during pregnancy, dietary intake (energy content, composition of diet), smoking, educational level, etc. With regard to the child, birth weight, duration of breastfeeding, speed of growth and size of weight increments during the initial weeks and months of life, preservation of BMI percentile – eventual upward positive crossing of BMI percentile, earlier start of adiposity rebound, intake of energy and composition of the diet (especially proteins), physical activity and time spent watching television during preschool years, family lifestyle and education level of both parents, etc. The combination and accumulation of the aforementioned factors at the beginning of life have been demonstrated to be factors, which can contribute sooner or later to the development of obesity.

Key words:
obesity, childhood, mother’s influence, energy balance.
