Summary
Alcohol is a serious risk to public health. The number of at risk and dependent drinkers in the Czech Republic are estimated based on the AUDIT questionnaire, which was used in a population survey citizens’ views on health and health care in 2006 (N = 2326, ages 18-64 years, mean age 39.2 years). The results show that 2 % of the population, which means over 140 000 economically active individuals of the Czech Republic consume alcohol with such problems that they require professional help. Risky or harmful alcohol consumption is noted in nearly a fifth of the adult population, which translates to more than 1.3 million of the economically active adult population of the Czech Republic.
Key words:
alcohol, risk, public health.
