Summary
The object of the exercise was to measure the quality of life of elderly people suffering from mild and moderate cognitive impairment from the perspective of the patients themselves, their nurses and family members. Furthermore to determine whether the subjective quality of life of the seniors is affected by their age, gender, education and the level of their cognitive disorder. The sample consisted of 103 seniors with dementia, their attending nurses and family members. The quality of life of the participants was measured using the shortened version of the DEMQOL questionnaire. The overall quality of life and the ‘everyday life’ domain were best evaluated by the seniors themselves. The quality of life in the domain of feelings and memory was rated as the highest by the nurses. The patients stated that they experienced difficulties with going through positive emotions (enjoying their life), their temperament, having enough energy and self-confidence, difficulties with making decisions and their general health. Not going through negative emotions and everyday life were evaluated positively. The patients with mild cognitive disorder evaluated the domain of memory significantly higher (p=0.0220). Overall quality of life was evaluated as higher by patients with higher education (p=0.0077). The results of the study enabled us to identify those areas of seniors’ life where the opinions on the quality of life significantly differ. These findings may contribute to a better individual care.
