Summary
In the past few years, electronic cigarettes have become increasingly popular. Vaporized nicotine and other additional substances are inhaled by puffing similarly to smoking classic cigarettes. Groups of users advocate e-cigarettes as a safe way of smoking on public places and/or useful support for smoking cessation. E-cigarettes are produced by many small manufactures, usually with poor manufacturing standards. Despite of the absence of complex research, it seems that these products pose no serious immediate risk. Contemporary we know nothing about health consequences of long-term smoking of e-cigarettes. There is also no evidence that e-cigarettes are effective in successful stopping smoking. Before the evaluation of results obtained from well-designed safety and efficacy studies, e-cigarettes cannot be recommended neither for treatment of dependent smokers, nor for smoking on public places.
Key words:
e-cigarettes, smoking on public places, smoking cessation
