Summary
Neurodegenerative dementias are one of the most common mental disorders affecting the elderly. Although diagnostics of cognitive function impairment and dementias are getting better nowadays, the differential diagnosis among different types of dementia as well as evaluation of stages of dementia can still be difficult. Dementia is an incurable disorder with many characteristic features similar to oncological diseases, which means that the term staging could well be used in neurodegenerative dementias too. The author of this paper offers different points of view on staging of neurodegenerative dementias – psychiatric, functional geriatric and palliative.
Key words:
neurodegenerative dementia – staging – MMSE – comprehensive geriatric assessment – P-PA-IA strategy – palliative approaches
