Summary
Background and aim:
Sarcopenia, defined as loss of muscle mass and muscle function affects between 5–10 % of persons 65 years and older and has significant clinical and economic consequences. In the last year a self-administered quality of life questionnaire for sarcopenia „Sarcopenia and Quality of Life“(SarQoL) was developed in French and English language. To be of use in a different language and socio-cultural environment (i.e. Czech Republic) the questionnaire has to be translated and psychometric properties (internal consistency, validity and reliability) of the Czech version assessed.
Methods:
Translation of the English SarQoL version and its cross-cultural adaptation was performed according to the protocol in five phases: (1) translation to Czech language by two translators, (2) synthesis of both translation into version 1, (3) back translation to English by two translators, (4) experts´ review and creation of working version and (5) testing of the working version in 22 patients with sarcopenia and proposing the final Czech SarQoL version.
Results:
After translation and linguistic adaptation of SarQoL and testing its understandability and feasibility using focus group method involving 10 respondents the final SarQoL version in Czech language was proposed comprising 55 items grouped in 22 questions. There are 7 domains of health-related quality of life assessed by the questionnaire: physical and mental health, locomotion, body composition, functionality, activities of daily living, leisure activities and fears.
Conclusions:
We can recommend the new Czech version of self-administered quality of life questionnaire for sarcopenia SarQoL for further validation and evaluation of its psychometric properties. Validation is currently ongoing in Prague and Opava at authors´ affiliations.
