Článek přináší přehled současných představ o mechanizmu stárnutí a jeho odchylek – progerie a dlouhověkosti. Důraz je kladen na replikativní stárnutí, roli glykace a volných radikálů a na genetickou podmíněnost progerie i dlouhověkosti.

Overview
Contemporary views on the mechanisms of aging and aging variations – progeria and longevity are presented. Replicative aging, the roles of glycation and free radicals on the genetical determination of progeria and longevity are discussed.
