Summary
Sleep medicine is multidisciplinary branch with significant role of the otorhinolaryngologist especially in the area of sleep related breathing disorders. Snoring and sleep apnea are topics that have recently become more popular in lay as well as in professionals. The authors present a basic overview of pathophysiology, correct diagnosis and therapy in adult and pediatric patients.
Although the awareness of sleep medicine improves, we still encounter incorrect procedures that can harm the patient. The physician who deals with sleep disturbances should have at least basic education in somnology.
