Summary
Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) has significant therapeutic potential for a wide range of diseases, including its application as a salvage therapy in sudden sensorineural hearing loss. Our goal was to verify the degree of its influence on the resulting effect of HBOT treatment that uses primarily corticosteroids and hemorrheologic pharmacotherapy. We have processed data of 59 individuals. In primary therapy of 38 probands had been applied HBOT in addition to pharmacotherapeutic treatment, control group of 21 individuals was treated only by pharmacotherapy. In all subjects there have been done audiometric tests of the average hearing threshold before and after a series of 10 exposures to HBOT. The results show that the addition of the HBOT to the treatment of sudden sensorineural hearing loss significantly increased the level of improvement in the average hearing threshold in all seven frequencies (p < 0.001). In the control group the level of improvement was not statistically significantly at the frequencies 250 Hz (p = 0.19), 500 Hz (p = 0.08), 4000 Hz (p = 0.25), 6000 Hz (p = 0.34) and 8000 Hz (p = 0.13). Statistically significant improvements in hearing threshold in the control group, we found only in the frequencies 1000 Hz (p = 0.01) and 2000 Hz (p = 0.02). Probants exposed to HBOT exhibited in contrast to the control group statistically significantly higher mean improvements in hearing threshold in the middle and higher frequencies 1000 – 2000 Hz and 4000 - 8000 Hz (p = 0.04). The rate of improvement in hearing threshold of 10 dB or more in the HBOT group was almost double compared to the control group (63.6% vs. 35.7%). Our results show that HBOT significantly positively affect the treatment results. Due to the fact that the effect of treatment of sudden hearing loss depends largely on early treatment extension treatment for HBOT can positively influence the final effect.
