Summary
Author presents retrospective analysis of 658 patients who underwent surgery because of suspicion on acute appendicitis in 24 hours after admission to a surgery department of a county hospital in six years period. He focused on incidence of surgical site infections and possibilities of their prevention. He compares his results with published data and advises use of antibiotic prophylaxis in all patients indicated for appendectomy because of suspected acute appendicitis. He hints about absence of valid surgical site infections registry.
Key words:
acute appendicitis – appendectomy – surgical site infections
