Summary

Dental cari es is a multifactori al, transmissible and infecti o us dise ase of hard dental tissues. The microflora of dental plaque, saccharides in fo od, saliva and host tissues are the key factors involved in the pathogenesis of dental cari es. The principal bacteri  um responsible for dental cari es initi ati on is Streptococcus mutans. The bacteri um is transmitted to oral cavity of the child from the mother. A high level of bacteri a in the mother’s mo uth incre ases the risk of the child’s oral cavity infecti on. Tre atment of dental cari es in very yo ung children is difficult due to lack of the child‘s co operati on. The caries preventi on in yo ung children is e asi er than its tre atment, but it sho uld start in pregnant women.
