Summary
Phytoestrogens are substances found in plants, similar to estrogen molecules in their chemical composition, which allows them to bind to estrogen receptors found in different issues of the organism. In gynaecology, we can use phytoestrogen preparations mainly to alleviate discomforts of women in perimenopause and menopause. Further they present a possible therapeutic option for girls in need of adjusting their menstruation cycles, or to reduce the symptoms of premenstrual syndrome. The phytoestrogenic preparations now find increasing application in the cosmetic industry, where their favourable effects on the skin, breast growth, improvement of the quality of hair and nails are made use of. Numerous new products increasingly appear on the market and studies are undertaken to clarify the specific effects of phytoestrogens.
