Summary

The hybrid imaging system PET/CE, which has been developed at the beginning of this decade, provides the possibility of a fusion of anatomical visualization by means of computer tomography and visualization of the metabolic activity of a carrier labeled with a radionuclide with decay (most often 18F isotope with a half-life of 110 minutes). The subsystem of computer tomography serves not only for simple CT-examination but is also used in a reconstruction algorithm of PET data for so-called attenuation correction, i.e. correction for the attenuation of activity of deep-seated structures caused by absorption of the radiation in tissues. The authors describe the use of 18FDG-PET/CT for detection of tumors of the urinary tract outlet system, testicles, prostate and hemato-oncological tumors, and assess the suitability and benefits of this examination mode in these indications. With a correct indication for 18FDG-PET/CT examination, this modality brings, despite the high costs, a considerable medical profit as well as economical saving of oncological therapy costs.
