Current scope of ureteroscopy

Summary

With the advancement of technique and improvement of instrumentation ureteroscopy has become an integral part of treatment of ureteral calculus. Ureteral at any given location within the ureter can now be treated safely and effectively. Due to its effectiveness and safety most distal ureteral stones are now trea­ted initially with ureteroscopy. Mid to upper ureteral stones can also be treated safely and effectively with ureteroscopy although shock wave lithotripsy is a viable alternative. Treatment of renal calculi can also be successfully treated with flexible uretero-pyeloscopy in selected patients. Furthermore, ureteroscopy can be performed to treat variety of pathology in the urinary tract.
