Summary

Eosinophilic gastroenteritis is a rare clinical condition. It manifests with various gastrointestinal symptoms in dependence on the depth of involvement of the intestinal wall. We are presenting a case report of a 18-year old woman, who was admitted for abdominal pain, vomiting and diarrhea. In ultrasound examination of the abdomen an ascites was described, in laboratory tests hypereosinophilia was found. Subsequently the patologic infiltration of the jejunal wall was described on the abdominal CT, the diagnosis of lymphoma was suspected and the diagnostic laparoscopy has followed. Haematologic malignancy, parasitic infections, autoimune diseases, bowell inflammation and other causes of hypereosinophilia were excluded and on the basis of the histological examination the diagnosis of eosinophilic gastroenteritis was established. The patient was successfully treated with antihistaminics. The goal of our statement is to remember this rare disease, which can manifest beyond the other gastrointestinal symptoms also as an ascites. When ascites of unknown aethiology is found and also hypereosinophilia is present, the eosinohphilic gastroenterits should be considered. After proper diagnosis the disease is very well responding to the therapy.

Key words:
ascites – gastroenteritis – hypereosinophilia – corticosteroids
