Summary

The major innovation of the current European guidelines on the diagnosis and management of acute pulmonary embolism is a new risk stratification, where the most contentious medium risk category was cancelled. According to the size of the right ventricle, function of the right ventricle and the troponin level in this group of patients has now been categorised into the groups with either high risk or low risk. According to this new categorisation, specified diagnostic methods and advanced treatment are presented, including new oral anticoagulants, thrombolysis and embolectomy. The guidelines also update the issues of pulmonary embolism in pregnancy and in connection with cancer.
