Summary
Introduction: There is indisputable evidence that smoking accelerates the origination of premature cardiovascular incidents and the persistence of this bad habit leads to a worse prognosis of heart and vessel diseases.
Goal: The goal of the article is to describe the situation of incidence of smoking in the lay population aged 40+ in the Czech Republic.
Methods: To meet the goal, a structured interview with a representative sample of persons from the lay public over 40 years of age was made. 1,992 persons were approached. The selection set was representative for age, gender and region. The criteria for enrolment included voluntariness, age above 40 years and the prevalence of smoking and related behaviours, which was followed by several questions in face-to-face interviews. Additionally, we investigated how the public view smoking as an influenceable risk factor for the incidence and progress of heart and vessel diseases.
Results: The analysis of the results showed that 514 (25.8%) of the 1,992 respondents above 40 years or age were smokers. Out of these 514 smokers, almost one-half (47.6%) were being treated for heart and vessel diseases. A partial goal of the study consisted in monitoring the BMI in relation to smoking. The results show that there are more regular smokers among respondents who are overweight (236; 45.9%) (p < 0.01). Significant dependences were also found in the relation between BMI and staying daily in a smoky environment, which was also reported more frequently by respondents with a BMI above 25. Interestingly, smokers are aware of the fact that smoking leads to and worsens the prognosis for heart and vessel diseases (p < 0.01).
Conclusions: The nurse plays an important role both in primary and secondary prevention of cardiovascular diseases. Repeated talks, explanations and motivation of the patients to stop smoking within the therapy of cardiovascular diseases are an integral part of the comprehensive nursing practice offered.
