Summary

Arterial stiffness is an independent predictor of cardiovascular risk in both adult and pediatric population. Mechanism of arterial rigidity genesis is a complex process characterized by the interaction between inflammatory reaction, endothelium and vascular smooth muscle cells leading to the structural changes of the arterial wall with reduction of its elasticity. Recently, a measurement of pulse wave velocity (PWV) has been proved a simple noninvasive method useful for assessment of the arterial stiffness, indirectly reflecting the elasticity of aorta. PWV in children is greatly influenced by age, gender and blood pressure variation.

PWV measurement provides a useful clinical information about the risk of vascular damage and might be a relevant tool for stratification of cardiovascular risk.
