Summary
Exhaust emissions can influence the health of the whole body and not just the respiratory system. This study focuses on the impact of transport emissions on immune system functions in occupationally overexposed individuals (traffic policemen, bike messengers) and normally exposed persons (bank sector employees). The study was based on allergological and immunological medical history and laboratory tests. We found no significant difference in the results of laboratory tests in humoral and cellular immunity between the two groups studied. Allergies were found in the range 20-40 % as in normal population studies. The clinical signs and subjective feelings of allergic inflammation were more severe in the group of traffic policemen and messengers. This result can be related to higher exposure to transport emissions in these groups. Verification of this postulate is very difficult due to the number of individuals tested and lack of literature devoted to the influence of transport emissions on the human immune system.
Key words:
transport emissions, immune system, exposed persons.
