Summary
Blood transfusion should be avoided if possible. Intravenous (IV) iron optimises the response to ESA therapy in patients with chemotherapy induced anaemia independent of IV iron paramaters. The addition of IV iron reduces the rise in platelet counts caused by ESA administration. IV iron is currently inappropriately underutilised and can be used to correct iron deficiency or functional iron deficiency in patients with anaemia associated with cancer.
Key words:
erythropoietic stimulating agents (ESA), IV iron, anaemia associated with cancer.
