Summary

Endovenous laser ablation (EVLA) and Endovenous radiofrequency ablation (RFA) are two of the contemporary mini-invasive approaches to the treatment of varicose veins. The aim of this paper is review these methods and present our experiences with EVLA. The principles of these methods are heat coagulation and subsequent obliteration of varicose veins, using either laser (EVLA) or bipolar stream (RFA).

From November 2004 to June 2011 the authors operated on 480 patients and carried out 593 endovenous procedures. Recanalisations were recorded in 33 (8%) patients. We have not noted any major complications such as flebothrombosis or pulmonary embolism. EVLA is a painless mini-invasive method and results in early return to work. EVLA is a safe and effective method.

Key words:
endovenous laser ablation, radiofrequency ablation, chronic venous insufficiency.
